Central Electricity Authority (CEA) is a statutory body constituted under the erstwhile electricity (Supply) act, 1948, hereinafter replaced by the electricity act 2003, where similar provisions exists, the office of the CEA is an attached office of the ministry of power. The CEA is responsible for the technical coordination and supervision of programmes and is also entrusted with a number of statutory functions.
On 10th June, 2003, the Electricity Act was notified by the Govt. of India.and nbsp This Act seeks to consolidate the laws relating to generation, transmission, distribution, trading and use of electricity and generally for taking measures conducive to development of electricity industry, promoting competition therein, protecting interest of consumers and supply of electricity to all areas, rationalization of electricity tariff ensuring transparent policies regarding subsidies, promotion of efficient and environmentally benign policies, constitution of Central Electricity Authority, Regulatory Commissions and establishment of Appellate Tribunal and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto and nbsp The Act extends to the whole of India except the state of Jammu and Kashmir.
The Commission intends to promote competition, efficiency and economy in bulk power markets, improve the quality of supply, promote investments and advise government on the removal of institutional barriers to bridge the demand supply gap and thus foster the interests of consumers.
The mission of the Bureau of Energy Efficiency is to assist in developing policies and strategies with a thrust on self-regulation and market principles, within the overall framework of the Energy Conservation Act, 2001 with the primary objective of reducing energy intensity of the Indian economy.
