Japanese major Toshiba is betting big on India and expanding its renewable energy business. It is also looking to leverage its Indian joint ventures to establish manufacturing bases globally
Toshiba has announced a comprehensive strategy for expanding its social infrastructure business in Asia and around the world, with a special emphasis on the Indian market. ´Toshiba will position India as a strategic world business hub in its thermal power, energy transmission and distribution equipment, water and water-waste treatment, and software development business,´ said Hisao Tanaka, Company President and CEO. The company plans to invest Rs 3,000 crore in the Indian market in the next five years to expand its footprint, targeting sales of Rs 18,000 crore from India by 2017 pushed by the power and infrastructure segments, contributing almost 70 per cent of the total sales, Tanaka said.
The company had also announced its intention of exploring the Indian renewable energy market in the future. "India is a very attractive market and we see a huge potential here," he said. On their future growth prospects, particularly in Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Africa, where many major thermal power generation projects are planned, Toshiba will reinforce and expand its thermal power business in India and the wider region in cooperation with the company´s global engineering function in Japan. And in a recent move, the company, going ahead with its plans to harness the opportunity in the Indian renewable energy market, Toshiba JSW Power Systems Private Ltd., a Toshiba Group company based in Chennai, India, was awarded a contract by NTPC Limited for the supply of two 800MW super-critical steam turbine and generator island packages for the Darlipali Super Thermal Power Station in Darlipali, in Orissa. The new steam turbines will enter operation by early 2018. Toshiba JSW will carry out engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) of the complete steam turbine and generator island packages.
In the field of hydroelectric power generation, Toshiba is also eager to contribute to the development of India by deploying the group´s comprehensive capabilities. Through cooperation with plant engineering company TPSC India, Toshiba will offer one-stop solutions covering engineering, manufacturing, procurement, commissioning and services in India.
The Japanese major is an undisputed market leader in supercritical steam turbines and generators in the 800MW category in the country, having won orders for ten sets in all: five for Coastal Gujarat Power Limited, a subsidiary of Tata Power Company Limited, for its Mundra UMPP in Gujarat, which are now in successful commercial operation; three for NTPC's Kudgi Super Thermal Power Project; and now two sets for the Darlipali Super Thermal Power Project.
The company has also won an order for two 660MW supercritical steam turbine and generator island packages for Meja Thermal Power Project from Meja Urja Nigam Pvt. Ltd., a joint venture between NTPC and UPRVUNL. In Janaury this year, Toshiba had acquired Vijai Electricals Ltd's power transmission and distribution businesses. The acquired assets include the power transformer, distribution transformers and switchgear businesses.
With a strong focus on the energy business, Toshiba Corporation also recently announced the opening of a new Global Engineering and Production Center (EPC) at Toshiba Corporation's Keihin Product Operations, which will operate as a global hub for key engineering and manufacturing functions for Toshiba Group's energy-related business.
Looking ahead, Toshiba Group will look to reinforce its market presence by making the best use of the Global Engineering and Production Center and the manufacturing and EPC capabilities of Toshiba JSW in India in markets around the world, including Asia, the Middle East and Africa, where demand for thermal power plants is strong.
