MIRDC training project completed successfully

Solar PV makers do not function in harmony
Following the sun

Web Exclusive  /  August

Following the successful completion of a three-year training project, experts at the Taiwanese Metal Industries Research & Development Center (MIRDC) will now be able to perform measurements related to their wind turbines themselves. This follows recognition by TÜV SÜD and accreditation from the Taiwan Accreditation Foundation (TAF).

Taiwan's energy policy pursues a long-term strategy of reducing CO2 emissions. The development and expansion of the production of energy in offshore wind farms is one important element of this strategy. The MIRDC initiated the training and technology project related to prototype measurement on wind turbines to develop the necessary know-how and keep the added value in Taiwan.

Measurements cover power curves, stress limits and sound emissions in line with international standards and directives. The three year training programme included but was not limited to the design and implementation of testing and certification processes as well as training courses in Taiwan and Germany.

“For the practical part of the training, the MIRDC was able to make use of a 2 MW wind energy turbine located in the port of Taichung,” explained Ullrich Knopf and Thomas Arnold, both responsible for the Project at TÜV SÜD. The training participants applied and performed their measurements on this demonstration turbine and evaluated the results against international standards.

“By successfully completing the training project, MIRDC achieved two important goals. Firstly, completion of the project will drive further expansion of offshore wind energy projects and, secondly, the expertise for this important sector stays here in Taiwan,” explains Lawrence Lee, wind energy expert at TÜV SÜD Taiwan.
