In some areas of the world, solar photovoltaic is already cost-competitive, Howard Wenger, President, SunPower Corporation, informs R Srinivasan.Howard Wenger was earlier president of the company’s utility and power plants business group. From 2007 through 2009, he served as president, utility power plants global business units, where he helped to grow the company’s sales more than 500 per cent. He earlier used to work for Pacific Gas and Electric Company in both research and strategic planning. He also served for one year as an invited researcher at the Ben-Gurion National Solar Energy Centre in Israel, working with some of the world’s leading solar scientists. He has also authored dozens of papers and developed software programmes and tools addressing various aspects of the energy business. He holds a BA in Environmental Studies at the University of California and an MS in Engineering from the University of Colorado. He spoke about the company’s concentrated solar tracker (C7), America’s biggest rooftop solar system (which has 14,000 panels), the Solarpark power plant in Germany (in 2004 it was the world’s largest PV installation with nearly 60,000 panels) which generates 10.1 MW, etc. Excerpts of the interview:The concentrated solar tracker (C7) was launched in Dallas. By when will it be launched in a price-sensitive market like India? The C7 tracker is available worldwide and our October launch in Dallas was a global launch of the product. It is ideal for regions with high solar irradiance through direct sunlight, including the US Southwest and areas of the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Asia and Australia.By when will India witness such developments as those mentioned below:
