Give us your estimate of the potential for Renovation & Modernisation (R&M) of thermal power plants in India.
Central Electricity Authority (CEA), government of India, has identified and listed many power plants for performance optimization and R&M programs to be carried out in the 12th Five-Year Plan. Now it the decision of respective State gencos to issue tender either for comprehensive R&M or need-based R&M.
Will renovating and modernizing old Indian power plants be a daunting task, especially since they are over three decades old?
Based on the condition and residual life assessment of each of the equipments and structures of the power plant, decision is taken to either run repair or replace to achieve the desired objective as mentioned above. The volume of the work is large and it takes almost two years.
Which thermal power station of MPGENCO will you be working on? Will you also be working on the other 50 conventional power stations that will be renovated and modernised by 2016?
We are working on the 2 x 210 MW Unit 1 and Unit 2 of Sanjay Gandhi Thermal Power Station, Birsinghpur, MP, which we won through a tendering process. In future, we would be participating in similar tendering projects published by the government.
What, according to you, are the main elements of an energy plan that would ensure uninterrupted power supply for smart cities?
An ideal blue print of power generation, requirement and deliver modules in a smart city, will constitute smart fuel to generate power. Municipal organic waste can be used to generate electricity along with other options like solar rooftop, wind and biomass. Some of the other options include the use of bio-methanation process along with options like rooftop solar panels over large buildings, battery powered rickshaws, bio fuel for city buses & taxis and adapting electricity networks to a sustainable energy system, smart metering and smart grids.
How is the Testing, Inspection & Certification (TIC) market poised in India?
T_V S_D South Asia started operations in 1994 when the TIC industry was still in its nascent stage, however, after the Indian economy was liberalized there was a major influx of domestic and international manufacturing companies which had to adhere to international norms and safety regulations.
The current market scenario has seen a major boom in industries like infrastructure, food processing and electronics which require specialists to tests and certify their products and systems. The industry is growing year-on-year at over 25 per cent for the past four-five years; and with the´Make in India´ initiative by the PMO we are expecting to see exciting times for the TIC industry.
You recently launched an electronics & electrical test lab at Bengaluru which you have said will help electronic manufacturers in India to reduce costs. Can you please elaborate?
The electronic and electrical testing facility caters to consumer electronic products, helping local manufacturers and suppliers of electronic products to comply with local BIS as well as global IEC, EN, FCC standards.
The lab will help electronic manufacturers in India reduce cost by sourcing locally instead of importing electronic goods from other countries that assure them quality at a higher cost.
This will also help reduce India´s dependency on importing consumer electronic goods, which currently features in the top eight categories of import. Further, the laboratory will help Indian suppliers adhere to international standards, which will not only increase their demand in the domestic market but also make them more competitive in the export market.
How strong is your position in the water management business in India?
Water utility has increased in recent times & has huge consumption in process plants. We have conducted many water management & water efficiency projects in India for many cement plants where a potential of 10-15 per cent reduction is possible. Apart from the private sector, even the government sector has been supporting water conservation programmes in India. In Gujarat, we have been awarded a water footprint/water management project from Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation for their mines, office buildings, plants & power stations. Apart from these, we have also completed water management projects at IOCL Haldia refinery & The Kerala Minerals and Metal Ltd.
