Two social organisations supported the decision of the Supreme Court to reject the suggestion of Indian Council for Forest Research and Environment (ICFRE) related to mining in Western Ghats.
ICFRE, in its Macro Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report submitted to the court, suggested exploring underground iron ore mining in the Western Ghats.
Earlier this month, the apex court disapproved and rejected the suggestion concerning mining operations in the Western Ghats and said no mining operations of any kind in the Western Ghats is to be countenanced.
This verdict of the apex court is welcomed by the National Committee for Protection of Natural Resources (NCPNR) and Samaj Parivartana Samudaya (SPS).
A top official of NCPNR said the ICFRE had gone beyond its terms of reference and recommended exploring feasibility of underground mining in the Western Ghats, which was one of the ecological hotspots in the world.
Both the organisations also welcomed the court order to disallow any new mining leases in Bellary, Tumkur and Chitradurga districts without its permission.
This will include cases for which notifications have been issued but where leases have not been executed.
