The government has put in abeyance for two months a notice served on Essar Power that sought to terminate its lease for mining the Tokisud North coal block in Jharkhand. The move is aimed at giving the company time to obtain the required clearances and save the lease from cancellation. It comes after Essar Power deposited with the coal ministry the final upfront payment of 17.58 crore for the block it had won in an aggressive bidding last year. The Tokisud North captive coal mine was won by Essar Power to partly fuel its 1,200 MW Mahan power plant. The ministry had served the termination notice last month as the company had failed to clear the dues.
