What are the triggers for demand for power back-up systems in India at present?
The government announcements to boost the renewable energy sector and increasing domestic production of the coal exemplify Government of India´s efforts to improve the power situation. According to International Energy Agency (IEA) 2015 outlook, India would need an investment of $100 billion a year to boost its energy sector - development of power plants, refineries, grids and gas fields. As a result of all this, the power back-up industry has seen rapid growth and demand for alternative/backup power sources in the form of generator sets, power inverters, UPS, battery, etc. is expected to rise further in coming years.
From our company perspective generator set business will go up by $1.5 billion to $2.6 billion by end of this year in India due to power shortage. Demand for components required for power generation business will also witness growth. We at Cooper are looking at getting into Solar power along with effective use of power on the shop floor.
What are the segments you are present in and which of these dominate the market?
We operate in genset business, which has been witnessing a consistent rise in demand owing rapid development of various sectors like IT and ITes, telecom, construction, healthcare, residential and commercial establishments. With the recent emission norms also we were able to forecast the requirement and prepare ourselves well in advance; infact, we were the first manufacturer to be ready with the CPCB II complaint gensets way before it was made officially mandatory by the government. Our gensets enjoy a unique position amongst other diesel power generators and we are proud of the range of gensets that we produce.
Currently the 10 KVA to 200 KVA Genset range is powered by 2, 3, 4 and 6-cylinder Cooper engines and these diesel engines are based on state-of-the-art CRDi and rotary fuel systems technology. These advanced power generators are entirely produced at Cooper Corporation´s manufacturing and assembly plant located at Satara, Maharashtra, India. The latest technical collaboration with Ricardo UK has helped us expand our range of engines from 3.5 KVA to 1000 KVA available in both Diesel and CNG versions.
This will enable us to now cover almost 75 per cent of the range of products available in the market putting us in the same league as the biggest players in the industry in a relatively short period of time.
What are the emerging technologies in this segment and what is the contribution of India in R&D for these products?
At Cooper Corporation we keep a close track of latest technology and foresee / predicts future requirements. We have a strong team of R&D and has been investing heavily in technology upgradation. These technological advancements enables us to tailor make products for our customers which compliance with all government norms of each of the countries that we do business with. The latest emission norm CPCB II implemented by the government required the industry to invest into technology upgradation. We were the first manufacturer to be ready with the CPCB II complaint gensets way before it was made officially mandatory by the government.
