Coal India Ltd is considering building Rs 70 billion ($1.2 billion) worth of solar projects to compensate for carbon pollution, said people familiar with the plan.The company is in talks with the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy for a combined capacity of 1,000-megawatts according to reports. Earlier, coal and power minister Piyush Goyal described Coal India and power producer NTPC Ltd as "massive polluters" and said they "must give back to the society." The solar initiative is part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's plan to provide round-the-clock electricity to homes and factories.
